The purpose of a comprehensive, developmental guidance and counseling program is to help students acquire areas of interest and awareness. The program should also help students develop an ability to analyze knowledge and apply skills learned from that knowledge.

Areas of skill development include self-confidence, motivation to achieve, decision-making, goal-setting, planning, problem-solving, interpersonal effectiveness, communication skills, cross cultural effectiveness, and responsible behavior.
